FAQ’s

How do Hachette Australia license subsidiary rights?

Hachette Australia is actively engaged in licensing a broad range of subsidiary and other rights for the books on our fiction, non-fiction and children’s lists.

The rights we license depend on those we hold for individual titles but those we work with regularly include but are not limited to, translation, audio, anthology, book club, condensation, stage, film, television, merchandising, large print and animation.

Each book we publish is assessed for its rights potential before publication. Questions we consider include: Has the author’s work been published overseas before? If so, where and by whom? Would the content ‘travel’ to another country or culture? Is it a project with a particular narrative hook that would adapt to a visual medium such as film or television? Would it work as an audio book? Would the illustrations appeal as single images on calendars or greeting cards?

Once these questions have been answered we draw up a specific rights plan for each book and work to make sure that the appropriate producers, publishers and companies are aware of it.

The methods we use to make sure as many people as possible know about our books include the following: sending tailored rights information sheets to appropriate individuals; producing print and electronic versions of rights guides several times a year and sending them out widely; working closely with an extensive network of subagents around the world who in turn work with publishers in their own countries; engaging, where appropriate, film, television and merchandising subagents who liaise with the appropriate development people within their own industries.

In addition, our staff members are regularly in touch with our sister publishing companies in the USA, the UK and in Europe, and regularly attend various international book fairs, such as the Frankfurt Book Fair, the London Book Fair and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
